Favorite Sources

For those of you who are interested in certain areas of human interaction, I’ve compiled below a list of topics and my favorite writers and resources.

Enjoy.

1.  Relationship Dynamics

Drs. Hal and Sidra Stone provide fascinating insight into the underlying dynamics occurring within a relationship. They also discuss the importance of energy modulation, the inner critic, and the development of one’s personality, all which are important to effect individual growth.

I recommend all their books and CDs. For example, “Embracing Our Selves”, “Embracing Each Other”, “Embracing Our Inner Critic”, “Partnering”, “The Voice Dialogue Series” (CDs)
.

2.  Communicating Desires and Needs

Dr. Marshall Rosenberg teaches a four-step technique to communicate one’s desires, needs, and anger effectively. The skills he teaches can change a conflict-ridden relationship to a harmonious, win/win relationship. I recommend all his books and CDs, especially his book Nonviolent Communication, Puddledancer Press, CA.

3.  Anxiety and Reactivity

Murray Bowen explains the concept of differentiation to show how handling anxiety with less reactivity is crucial in sustaining fulfilling relationships.

M. Kerr & M. Bowen
: Family Evaluation The role of the family as an emotional unit that governs individual behavior and development. W.W. Norton & Company, Inc., New York, (1988).

4.  Sexuality

David Schnarch applies the notion of differentiation to sexuality. He explains how anxiety impacts sexual intimacy and what it takes to grow sexually.

“Passionate Marriage” Henry Holt & Co. New York 1997.

“Constructing the Sexual Crucible Paradigm — a shift in sexual and marital therapy” W.W.
Norton & Company, Inc., New York, (1991).

5.  Analyses of Love and Life

James Hollis writes beautiful, intellectually-stimulating analyses of love and life from a Jungian standpoint. I recommend all books by Hollis.

“The Eden Project: In search of the magical other”, Toronto, Canada: Inner City Books (1998).

“Creating a Life: Finding your individual path”, Toronto, Canada: Inner City Books (2001). “Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life,” Gotham Books, (2005).

6.  Stories of Psychological Growth

Irvin Yalom M.D. — the humanistic psychiatrist who developed group therapy — tells wonderful stories illustrating how people resolve human struggles with philosophical issues such as facing death, choosing between independence and responsibility, opening oneself to others and protecting oneself from hurt.

I recommend all books and DVDs by Irvin Yalom, particularly, “The Schopenhauer Cure”, “When Nietzsche Wept”, “Momma and the Meaning of Life”, and “The Gift of Therapy.”
